Preschools in Reykjavík and vicinity will open at 1 pm and recreational activities of grade school students will resume, mbl.is reports. Previously, the plan had been to keep all preschools closed today, due to severe weather.

The worst weather is over in the southwestern part of the country, which is why the decision has been made to reopen at 1pm. That was confirmed by Chief Superintendent Víðir Reynisson.

Preschools which previously had announced that today would be reserved for planning will remain closed to students today.

Recreational centers, athletic activities, music schools and community centers operate as usual today.

The Capital Area Fire Department issued the following statement:

“Please note that today, Monday, a yellow weather alert takes effect in the capital area at 6 pm and remains in effect into Tuesday. Therefore, it is essential for parents and guardians to follow the weather update tomorrow morning before heading out to school.”

Preschools in Akureyri, North Iceland, will open at noon. Grade schools will remain closed all day, while recreational activities will resume at 1 pm.

Many parts of the country lost power overnight, due to the weather, including parts of the capital area. In most areas, power has been restored.

Early this morning, rescue teams in the southwestern part of the country had been called out close to 100 times, due to various wind damage. Luckily, resident heeded warnings, issued yesterday, and refrained from traveling.
