A candlelight walk on the rock Álfaborg, Borgarfjörður Eystri, the East Fjords, took place on Tuesday. This is an annual social event, held during Advent for the past 20 years by the Borgarfjörður Grade School. This year, the candlelight walk served, too, as a fundraiser for the students’ travel fund. About 80 candles were sold for that purpose.

Sigurður Högni Sigurðsson, department director at the grade school, tells mbl.is the event was a great success this year. “We had more candles that usually; the weather was good; and then we had an Advent concert in the evening. Overall, the Advent atmosphere was amazing.”

Álfaborg, which means ‘the rocky hill of elves,’ is, according to folklore, the capital of elves in East Iceland.
