10,000 Tremors in Southwest Iceland in Two Weeks

Since September 27, close to 10,000 tremors have been recorded near Keilir mountain, Southwest Iceland, 18 of which have been in excess of magnitude 3.0. mbl.is reports. An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 hit the area last night at 9:19 pm.

The largest earthquake during this swarm of tremors hit October 2 and measured 4.2 in magnitude.

“This continues at a slow pace,” Elísabet Pálmadóttir, natural hazards specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, notes. “We can’t predict what happens next.”
