Narrow Escape from Burning Lava: Video

Vala Hafstað

Shortly before noon on Friday, a man hiked across recently solidified lava at the eruption site by Fagradalsfjall, Southwest Iceland, after which he had to run for his life to escape the lava flow.

An mbl.is webcam, located in Geldingadalir valleys, recorded the incident, which you can see above.

The red arrow points to the man, hiking across the lava field when a large stream of lava suddenly gushes from the crater and down the hill, dangerously close to the man, who narrowly escapes it.

The video demonstrates how suddenly conditions can change at the eruption site and how important it is to keep a safe distance from the crater and the lava flow.
