More than 100 tourists spent the night at a Red Cross relief center in Vík í Mýrdal, South Iceland, after a stretch of the Ring Road to Reykjavík became impassable last night. More than ten of them missed their flight from Keflavík International Airport, and the road remains closed.

“I’m sure that more than ten people had a flight booked before noon,” states Árni Jóhannsson, who heads the Red Cross division in Vík. “They were annoyed, but that’s all.”

Five Red Cross volunteers assisted the tourists at the relief center, but all the tourists had left by about 8:30 am, even though the road remains closed.

“The people were hungry and decided to get something to eat while waiting for the road to reopen,” Árni states.

The Icelandic Road Administration expects the road to be reopened by noon. A great deal of snow fell overnight, and strong winds caused numerous large snow banks to form.
