Geothermal water is flowing into Múlakvísl from the Mýrdalsjökull ice-cap. People are advised to avoid the river due localised gas pollution (H2S) which can affect the respiratory system.
The electrical conductivity of the river is now approximately 250 microsiemens per centimetre and according to the met office the odour of sulphuric gases by the river is very strong.
A road construction company is on call by the Múlakvísl bridge to make sure that it doesn't collapse in the flooding.
