US professor of biology believes hunted whale to be a blue whale
Speaking to CNN, professor of biology Adam A.Peck at the University of Hawaii says that the whale hunted by Hvalur hf on Saturday night is a blue whale and not a hybrid blue/ fin whale as believed by Icelandic experts.
Peck says that most of the key appearance factors of a blue whale are there in the photographs he saw of the whale carcass.
Icelandic marine biologist Gísli Arnór Víkingsson said to mbl.is yesterday that he believes it's a rare hybrid whale but that this couldn't be confirmed until DNA samples from the animal have been investigated.
