Australian tourist Hanna Pethani fell asleep on the bus from Keflavik Airport to Reykjavik. To her great distress she woke up in complete darkness in an empty bus, parked in the Greyline’s bus company’s parking area.

After screaming for help for half an hour, she finally found an emergency switch that opened the door so she could get out. She found the driver in Greyline’s offices, by the parking area, where there's a 24/7 watch. He drove her straight to her destination. Rúv first reported this [link in Icelandic].

“We regret he didn’t see her and wake her up,” says Þórdís Lóa Þórhallsdóttir, CEO of Greyline. “This almost never happens, there’s a lot going on when 50-70 passengers leave a bus and fetch their luggage. It’s almost amazing she managed to sleep through it, she must have been exhausted. And naturally scared when she woke up.”

Pethani had been sitting in the back of the bus, and sagged down when she fell asleep, so the driver didn’t see her.

Grayline offered Pethani a free tour with the company to compensate for the incident. „I talked to her this morning, and she laughed about it. She was on her way to Jökulsárlón.”
