Cottages with a view of stunning Lake Þingvellir

Lake Þingvellir is one of Iceland's most beautiful natural wonders.

Lake Þingvellir is one of Iceland's most beautiful natural wonders.

There are few places as magical as beautiful Lake Þingvellir, Iceland's largest and deepest lake. Many Icelanders have summerhouses on the lake, which in summer, is a popular spot to fish Arctic char.

The lake itself is a rift valley lake which lies patially within Þingvellir National Park, on the Mid-Atlantic ridge where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet.

Now you can rent a cottage with a view of the lake in both summer and winter at Heiðarás which enjoy spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding mountainscape. This tranquil spot is magical during the summer in 24 hours daylight with the lake mirroring the sun's spectacular journey across the sky. In winter, it's one of the best places near Reykjavik to enjoy the Northern Lights.

The self-catering cottages are run by locals Kolbeinn and Bogga, and all have made-up beds, kitchenette and free internet and a children's play area outside.

There are plenty of great hikes in the vicinity and Þingvellir of course forms part of Iceland's Golden Circle, which includes the Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir hot spring area, about an hours drive.
