The most severe weather system seen in Iceland for 25 years is set to hit South Iceland any time now, according to weather forecasts.

The Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR) has warned people in South Iceland to stay indoors after noon today and in other parts of the country after 5 pm.

ICE-SAR project manager Jónas Guðmundsson compares the situation to 1991, when Iceland saw such severe weather that winds threw whole cars around and even took the roof off the national hospital.

“People need to bear in mind that, while the weather may not be terrible where they are, it might very well be at their destination, or along the way,” he says.

The Icelandic Met Office advises everybody to take the weather forecasts seriously and keep informed.
