The nature baths in Mývatn are an increasingly popular tourist spot. Birkir Fanndal Haraldsson

The Mývatn Nature Baths will be requiring new facilities due to enormous popularity. According to managing director Gunnar Atli Fríðuson, the number of visitors this year is estimated at 130 thousand, which is an increase by twenty percent from last year.

He adds that although the weather was cold and rainy this summer in North Iceland, tourists generally included the nature baths in their travel plans. The increase in visitors is almost entirely due to an increase in visits by foreign tourists. Fríðuson also adds that if this increase continues it's evident that the nature baths will have to rethink their facilities. "Our current facilities cannot handle 200 thousands visitors. " Asked by mbl.is whether the Blue Lagoon in Reykjanes, South Iceland is a role model he points out that the Blue Lagoon owns a share in the Mývatn Nature Baths and that the two cooperate.
