A digger and a tractor used during shooting of the new Fast and Furious movie at Iceland’s famous Mývatn lake have been involved in two separate breaking ice incidents.

Over the Easter weekend, the ice broke under a digger on the lake, plunging it half way into the water, recounts Davíð Örvar Hansson from the local Environment Agency.

“Some two litres of diesel leaked into the lake,” he explains, although measures were quickly taken to deal with the spill. Samples from the water reveal no diesel contamination.

Then, yesterday morning, the frozen surface gave way under a tractor, which also ended up partially submerged. No spillages have been reported.

According to Hansson, there is little danger of these incidents forcing an end to shooting.

“Shooting is nearly complete,” he explains. “These are the first incidents connected to the shoot and things have gone better than expected.”

Hansson adds, however, that the incidents do necessitate another look at how work is carried out on the ice. “We are dealing with this in good cooperation with the producers,” he states.
