Blooming days in the Town of Hot Springs
Hveragerði is a town known for flowering greenhouses, which naturally are the focus point of their town festival, Blómstrandi dagar (which translates into English as ‘blooming days’). The festival is held next weekend, 14 - 16 of August.
The festival is family friendly and although the focus is on flowers, the festival is also famous for ice cream. Every Saturday at Blooming Days, Kjörís, one of Iceland’s biggest ice cream producers, has a tent at the festival inviting guests to taste usual and unusual flavours of ice cream. Their biggest hit in the year 2014 is without a doubt Boobies, ice cream made from breastmilk.
Hveragerði is a lovely little town. It is situated only 45 km from Reykjavík and is unique, even on Icelandic standards. The name, Hveragerði means garden of hot springs. And it is. Just by the town, in the back garden of some of the houses, there is a geothermal park. A natural clay foot bath can be enjoyed in the park and afterwards you can soak your feet in one of the hot springs. In a hole in the park the locals bake the famous black bread using the geothermal ground as an oven. You can boil egg in the hot springs and later enjoy warm with the bread (Guidance is recommended, it is easy to get burned if you don’t know your way around)
