30 earthquakes since midnight

About 30 earthquakes have been recorded in the magma tunnel at Svartsengi since midnight, and they have all been small. There is no volcanic eruption in the area, according to Bjarki Kaldalóns Friis, a natural disaster expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

A total of 65 earthquakes were measured in the magma channel yesterday and if the earthquakes continue at the same rate as they did since midnight, they will increase to an even greater number by the end of the day.

Could be looking at another eruption as early as next week

According to Friis, about 0.4 million cubic metres of magma are added to Svartsengi every day, and the amount now is probably more than eight million cubic metres. The amount is therefore expected to have reached the lower limit. If you look at the events preceding previous eruptions on the Sundhnúkacrater row, the likelihood of a volcanic eruption increases when the amount has reached between 8 million and 13 million cubic metres.

20 earthquakes by Eiturhóll

The earthquake activity has continued at Eiturhóll on Mosfellsheiði, north of the Hellisheiði Power station and southwest of Lake Þingvellir.

Since midnight, there have been about 20 earthquakes, the largest of which measured between 2.5 and 2.9 magnitude. Yesterday, there were about 100 earthquakes in this region.

Friis says that the Met Office will examine this seismic activity today, including whether it is related to work being done on a drilling well on Hellisheiði.

This activity is not connected to the events on the Reykjavik peninsula, he added.
