Killer Whale stranded at Gilsfjörður bridge
The killer whale can be seen in the middle of this picture.
An orca, or killer whale, was found stranded at Gilsfjörður bridge, south of the Westfjords, yesterday. Rescuers are now working to get it a float.
“It was seen yesterday and was presumed dead,” says Kristján Ingi Arnarsson of the rescue team Ósk in Borgarfjörður. “It turned out this morning that it was alive. So we’re on our way to see if it can be helped out of the situation.”

Probably a calf
The whale is stranded north of the Gilsfjörður bridge. Kristján says the whale is on the smaller side, probably a calf. Kristján says that the decision on how to return the whale to deep waters has yet to be decided.
In cases where live animals drift ashore, the Authority often advises rescue operators in the area.
However, Ólína Jörundsdóttir, director of MAST, Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, said she was unaware of the animal when contacted by mbl.is to inquire about rescue operations.
