The Icelandic Met Office warns that major transportation disturbances are to be expected all over Iceland on Friday, and no travel is advised from 3 am till 9 pm that day, while a yellow alert is in effect.

An exceptionally deep low pressure system (as low as 930 hPa) will be headed our way from the southwest on Friday. The system will bring along strong, easterly gales, storm-force winds or a violent storm. The windiest conditions will be in the southern part of the country.

There will be snow or sleet – the heaviest precipitation in the south and east. Temperatures will be above freezing in lowland areas in the south and east by late Friday afternoon. The winds should die down Friday night.

Property damage can be expected, due to strong winds, particularly in the south. Residents are advised to secure all loose items outdoors.

High sea levels are expected, due to storm surge.

The severe weather will be preceded by exceptionally cold weather on Thursday, when temperatures will range between -10 and -20°C (between 14°F and 4 below zero on F).
