Special grant for men studying to become preschool teachers
Men make up for only 2% of preschool teachers in Iceland. There have been a number of projects designed to encourage men to study for the job, but success has been limited.
A new project has recently been started, which gives selected men a special grant to finish a master’s degree in kindergarten teaching. The grant is one million ISK (8,665 Euros), the men must start courses this fall and finish the degree.
The project’s name is Karlar í yngri barna kennslu, Men teaching younger children. The main goal is to bring preschool teaching to the attention of young men as a career.
The money comes from Jafnréttissjóður Íslands, Iceland's Equality Fund.
