The names of five Icelanders appear in the so-called ‘Bahama Papers’, a new cache of offshore files leaked to German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The ‘Bahama Papers’ are a list of thousands of Bahamas-registered companies. While the documents are of a different nature to the ‘Panama Papers’ leaked earlier this year and suggest no wrongdoing, Bahamas is well known as an offshore tax haven.

According to national Icelandic broadcaster RÚV, the Icelanders named in the Bahamas Papers are not politicians or individuals who have handled public money.

The Panama Papers scandal had a major impact on Icelandic society and even toppled the country’s then Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson.
