With just over a week to go until Iceland elects its first new president in twenty years, four candidates have begun to stand out from the crowd.

Author and historian Guðni Th. Jóhannesson has, as things stand, a commanding lead, with the latest Gallup poll giving him 51% support. His nearest rival is newspaper editor and former Prime Minister Davíð Oddsson, with 16.4%

Then come author and environmentalist Andri Snær Magnason (15.5%) and entrepreneur and investor Halla Tómasdóttir (12.5%). As can be seen from the graph below, all of the other candidates are below the 3% mark.

Presidential elections take place on Saturday 25 June, and the winner will replace Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, who has been President of Iceland since 1996.
