Anti-government protests are set to take place on Reykjavik’s Parliament Square (‘Austurvöllur’) at 7:40pm this evening.

Just under 400 people have so far accepted a Facebook invitation from Icelandic anti-government pressure group Jæja to hold a demonstration while the Icelandic Parliament (‘Alþingi’) conducts it final deliberations before winding up for summer recess.

“The government is off on holiday to ‘grill and chill’ while many of us can barely afford to buy food, let alone a barbecue to cook it on!” reads the event page.

Jæja goes on to bemoan what they see as the government’s disrespect to negotiating workers in recent pay disputes, its denial over the state of the health service, and its poor record on constitutional issues, the environment and corruption.

“Let’s hit Austurvöllur in numbers with drums, kitchen utensils, smoke alarms… anything which can generate the sound of anger and make our voices heard!”
