An event to celebrate 35 years since President Vigdís FInnbogadóttir was elected. mbl.is/Golli

An extensive programme is now taking place at Arnarhóll in the city centre of Reykjavik to celebrate the fact that it's been 35 years since Vígdís Finnbogadóttir was elected as president in Iceland. Finnbogadóttir was the world’s first democratically elected female president.

The programme is broadcasted live on RÚV national TV and radio and began at 7.30 pm. A number of well known Icelanders have made speeches on the occasion of this special event and a numer of artists are performing on stage at Arnarhóll. Among the acts are Icelandic bands Baggalútur and Samaris and Palli Knudsen from Denmark and Ylva Kihlberg from Sweden perform the beloved duet of Papagena and Papageno from Mozart's Magic Flute.
