“Everything is just sand and mud around here. It’s a little like a bombing zone.”

This is what Ágúst Bjartmarsson, the head of the Road Administration in Vík in Mýrdalur, says. The car park near the restaurant “Black Shore” in Reynishverfi near Reynisfjara Black Beach was covered by seawater last night. The road to Reynisfjara Black Beach was badly damaged during the storm.

“The sea severed a part of our road and shoved large rocks onto the carpark. It needs to be cleaned out with heavy machinery so we can use it again.”

Bjartmarsson says that the building itself is not in danger, as it stands elevated on a “cushion”. He also says that he hasn’t heard of other damage caused by heavy waves and that the defense walls withstood the seawater in Vík, although the waves were fierce.

“This happens every few years. The carpark is usually smooth, but now there are just rocks the size of basketballs everywhere.”

He says the biggest flood is forecast for tomorrow, so nothing will be repaired until after tomorrow.

“We just put a closure on the lower level and start fixing the road damage, but then the landowners plan to fix the carpark after tomorrow.”
