Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been detected above the health protection limit near the source of Múlakvísl river in Katlajökull glacier, since the morning of Thursday.

This is reported on the website of the Icelandic Met Office.

It says that the electrical conductivity in the river is not unusually high, but that it is expected to rise.

The electrical conductivity of water indicates the concentration of charged materials and chemicals in the water. The higher the concentration, the greater the magnitude of this conductivity.

Because of the gas pollution, people in the area are asked to take care near the river and especially near its source.
