Last week, two litres of liquid cocaine were seized at Keflavik international airport in Iceland. This is the first time that the drug in liquid form is seized in this country.
Finding liquid cocaine is very difficult both in luggage scans and X-rays. In this case, the liquid had been placed in four bottles labelled as mouthwash, soap and shampoo.
According to chief of customs Kári Gunnlaugsson the substance was found due to the imagination and surveillance tactics of highly capable customs officials.
He adds that smuggling cocaine in liquid is not on the increase internationally. "It takes a lot of effort changing the drug into liquid and probably some effort changing it back. It's simply being packaged in a form that's more difficult to find."
