The only shop, a roadstop shop next to the N1 petrol station in Þórshöfn, probably the most remote town in the whole of Iceland, burned down to the ground last night.
Þórshöfn is a tiny fishing village in North Iceland, located on the northern coast of the Langanes peninsula in the Þistilfjörður bay and has a population of 380 people.
"This is just terrible, just terrible," said Kapítóla Jónsdóttir, one of the owners, speaking to mbl.is earlier today. She arrived at the scene last night and witnessed the shop, Grillskálinn, burn to the ground.
No people were injured in the fire and police are investigating the cause of the fire.
A thick cloud of black smoke hovered over Þórshöfn this morning.
Six people worked in the shop, which also served as the local burger joint, and it's clear that the loss is a considerable shock to such a tiny community.
