The Iceland Met Office has issued a warning about heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in the area from Vatnajökull in the East, all of South East and South Iceland and towards the West to North West Iceland and Ísafjörður.

The heavy rainfall is expected for a few days and will be causing a lot of glacial melt followed by flooding.  Rivers are already high with water due to rainfall in the past couple of weeks which means that the danger of flooding could become immediate, that is, tonight, especially at the Hvítá river in South Iceland and Norðurá and Hvítá in Borgarfjörður.

People are urged to refrain entirely from crossing streams and rivers by vehicles. Mud slides can also be expected.
