Westman Islands police in Iceland have confirmed that a woman was transported in urgence by plane from the islands to Reykjavik on the morning of last Saturday after having been found naked and severely injured in a garden.

The woman, in her forties, had received severe blows to her face which was almost unrecognisable due to bruising, had a fractured skull and her body temperature had dropped to 35.3 degrees C.

A suspect in his thirties has been arrested and is in police custody.

A witness saw a man walking away, wearing dark clothes and smoking a cigarette walking away from the victim. The witness rushed to the woman's aid.

Around an hour later, police arrested the suspect at his home where he admitted to having gotten into a "brawl" with a a woman intending to do inflict damage on the restaurant which they were outside of.

The man's girlfriend told police that he had just arrived home.

Doctors believe that the woman received several kicks to her head and face. Witnesses describe having seen a man beating a woman up outside the restaurant and holding her face down in a cement ashtray. The witness had intervened and the man let the woman go, and the woman walked away.

If the suspect is found guilty on all counts he could face 16 years in prison according to Icelandic law.
