Icelandic drug duo face heavy jail sentence

The Icelandic couple arrested in Brazil between Christmas and New Year on suspicion of smuggling cocaine could receive a prison sentence of 5-15 years if found guilty.

The 26-year-old man and 20-year-old woman were arrested in Fortaleza, Brazil last week. Four kilos of cocaine were hidden in condoms were found in their belongings and Brazilian police suspect them of planning to smuggle the drugs out of the country.

The couple are currently remanded in custody in a federal prison for a month while Brazilian police complete their investigation of the case. Only then will it emerge whether or not the pair will be charged.

If prosecuted and found guilty, the two Icelanders could receive a prison sentence of anything between five and fifteen years in a Brazilian state prison.

According to the Icelandic Foreign Ministry, as well as the two individuals involved in this case, there are a further two Icelanders serving sentences in Brazilian jails.
