Nine people in Iceland were arrested yesterday as part of a Europe and US-wide crack down on the manufacture and supply of illegal anabolic steroids.

Known as Operation Underground, joint police operations led by Europol and the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have culminated in a series of global law enforcement actions targeting every level of the industry.

In Iceland, large quantities of steroids and related equipment were seized, together with money suspected of being the proceeds of dealing in steroids.

Houses were searched in various parts of Greater Reykjavik and Reykjanesbær. Those arrested are mostly individuals in their thirties and include one woman. Searches unearthed not just steroids, but also erectile-dysfunction drugs and marijuana.

Simultaneous operations took place yesterday in various countries in a coordinated effort to root out trade in illegal anabolic steroids, a crime which “spans across the globe and cyberspace”.
