The seal cub who escaped from the Reykjavik Family and Farm Zoo this weekend has been put down. This was confirmed by the director of the zoo, Tómas Óskar Guðjónsson when mbl.is called him this morning.

Iceland Monitor yesterday morning, police were called out to deal with a seal pup which had escaped from the Reykjavik Family and Farm Zoo and found its way to the nearby Laugardalur campsite.

Guðjónsson says that the zookeepers decide each August which seal cubs are to be put down due to lack of space in the small pond where the seals spend their lives.

A Facebook group was set up yesterday where over a thousand people joined in the hope of saving the seal cub from his fate.

The cub will now most likely end up as feed for the foxes at the zoo.
