Captain Sigurður Pétursson, better known as Ísmaðurinn, or the Iceman, was rescued along with his family when their vessel sank on its way from Bolungarvík to Greenland. According to his brother, Ólafur, three adults and one child were all saved and transported to Kulusuk, Greenland with a helicopter.

Greenland police authorities confirmed to mbl.is that the coast guard had received an emergency report and that four people were saved.

Pétursson, who first went to Greenland in 1997 became enchanted with the country and its people and has lived there ever since. In an interview with Morgunblaðið newspaper from 2005 he describes the harsh winters, icebergs, sealhunting and hunting polar bears. "He's a professional hunter in East Greenland. He goes on long hunting trips far away from human habitation and eats raw whale out on the vast expanse of ice. He even puts sharks on a leash."
