Magnitude 4 quakes off SW Iceland
A wave of tremors off the coast of south-west Iceland this evening were felt in the towns of Reykjanes and Akranes. The strongest approached magnitude 4.
Reports have come in of people feeling the tremors in parts of the Reykjanes peninsula in south-west Iceland. The wave began around 9pm and at 10:30pm seismic activity had not yet ceased and up to 100 tremors had been recorded, according to the Icelandic Met Office.
“Tremor waves are not uncommon in this area,” reads a Met Office statement. “Developments are being closely monitored.”
UPDATE
Some 200 tremors have been detected since yesterday evening. The strongest was of magnitude 5 at 2:25am. Activity died down around 7am this morning.
