Amazing View of Vestmannaeyjar Islands: Video

Vala Hafstað

Vestmannaeyjar islands are known for their beautiful landscape, shaped by volcanic activity.

In January of 1973, a volcanic eruption began on the largest of the islands, Heimaey, resulting in the whole island being evacuated. The eruption lasted until July 3 that year. By that time, nearly a third of the island’s houses had been destroyed, many of them buried in lava.

The islands are a windy spot in the wintertime, but a week ago, the weather was perfect and ideal for filming this unique landscape with the help of a drone.

See for yourself by taking a look at the video above, which gives you an amazing view of the islands. The music accompanying the video is by the late composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. It was composed for the film The Last and First Men.

You can learn more about the 1973 eruption by visiting Eldheimar, the town’s volcano museum.

There are numerous activities on offer for visitors, detailed here.
