A traveller arriving from Barcelona to Keflavik International Airport in Iceland was stopped at customs for smuggling five lizards into the country.

The lizard had been placed in a plastic tank in the man's suitcase, complete with a packed travel snack of lettuce.

Customs officials seized the lizards as it is illegal to bring animals into Iceland, whether they are pets or wild animals.  To bring pets into Iceland strict rules apply and they must undergo quarantine to prevent disease spreading.

The lizards therefore had to be put down at the local veterinary clinic.
