Members from Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue are now working on getting travellers down from Möðrudalsöræfi. A mountain road and a part of the nr. 1 ring road that connects North Iceland with East Iceland.

There is a storm raging in the area and the road is closed. Wind is around 30 m/s, reaching up to 40 m/s. All of the local SAR teams, with their gears and gadgets are now working on helping people stuck on the road.

“The weather is insane, and visibility is next to nothing. They [SAR] have to warn each other when the cars pass on the road,” says Benedikt Arnórsson, from Egilsstaðir SAR.

A bus with 53 passengers slid of the road in Langidalur, and at similar time two smaller busses crashed into another. One was empty, 16 passengers in the other. Luckily none of the people were hurt, though they were getting very cold when SAR reached them.

The call for help came around noon, before the road was closed, but the weather was already bad at the time.
