The storm Icelanders have been preparing for has hit east Iceland, roads are already closing south of Vatnajökull glacier. The Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue warns travelers to take a good look at the weather forecast today, and to stay put rather than travel in North,East and South East Iceland.

The Icelandic Met Office predict wind up to 23 m/s in East Iceland. South of Vatnajökull, from Lómagnúpur to Berufjörður the wind will reach 35-45 m/s, which will render the roads unpassable.

The storm will get worse as the day goes on and will hit North Iceland soon.

Update:

Two buses have already slid of the road in South Iceland today. The passangers vere mostly unharmed, only a few sustained minor injuries according to Odd­ur Árna­son, head policeman in South Iceland.
