Iceland road deaths quadruple
A fatal car accident on Boxing Day has brought the total number of people killed on Icelandic roads this year up to sixteen – four times higher than last year.
Last year saw just four people killed in traffic incidents in Iceland, the lowest figure in 75 years. 2015 is now the deadliest year for Icelandic road deaths since 2009, when seventeen people lost their lives.
Considerably greater numbers of tourists in Icelandic could be part of the explanation, says Ágúst Mogensen of the Icelandic Transportation Safety Board (ITSB).
“This year, six foreign drivers – of which five tourists – have caused fatal road accidents. There were none last year,” explains Mogensen.
