Fishermen aboard the trawler Þórunn Sveinsdóttir VE recently caught a most unusual fish in their nets when fishing south west of Surtsey island.

According to the Westman Islands maritime museum the fish has the remarkable name of "kjáni" which translates to "silly" in Icelandic and what's more, he's from a species of fish called "kjánaætt" which means "silly species."

The fish is a deep sea species of fish able to live at a depth of 2,000 metres.  It's going to be stuffed and displayed at the Westman Islands maritime museum.

This morning Iceland Monitor contacted the Icelandic Marine Institute to find out the name of the fish in English or Latin and they were extremely helpful but unfortunately their deep-sea fish expert is on holiday today.

We therefore ask any fish expert readers out there who might know what the fish is called to drop us a line at icelandmonitor@mbl.is.
