Yesterday was the autumn equinox, when the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal. Morgunblaðið photographer Árni Sæberg captured two tourists taking a break in the mild autumn weather at Landmannalaugar, a famous nature serve in the Icelandic highlands. The area is known for its natural geothermal hot springs and strangely coloured landscapes and it's one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

Landmannalaugar also forms one end of the popular Laugarvegur hiking trail and offers mountain huts and sleeping bag accommodation in summer. In autumn, Landmannalaugar is pretty quiet, there are less tourists, fewer coach trips and weather conditions can start to get dangerous.
