Around Iceland 2015: Dalvíkurbyggð

Iceland’s national newspaper Morgunblaðið is on a six-week 2015 tour of Iceland!

The paper’s journalists and photographers will be bringing us news and images of everyday life, culture, business, nature, education, services and more from the four corners of the land. Today’s destination: Dalvíkurbyggð.

Dalvíkurbyggð

Dalvíkurbyggð, and the neighbouring municipalities of Eyjafjarðarsveit and Grýtubakkahreppur, lie on the eastern and western shores of Eyjafjörður fjord in North Iceland. They have a combined population of some 3,300 people.

This unassuming site in Hauganes (to the south along the coast from Dalvík) is the site selected for a new king-crab farm – the first of its kind in Iceland. The giant crabs fetch a high price and the plan is to export most of the produce to foreign markets.

In Grenivík, across the water from Dalvík on the western cost of Eyjafjörður, is Gallery Glóa, a gallery-cum-workshop-cum-boutique run by Eygló Kristjánsdóttir. The artist decorates eveything from bottles and stones to sweeping brushes.

This building in Dalvík is the home of the Dalvík Theatre Company. The Company has been in existence since 1944 and their productions are very popular with locals. They usually put on two productions a year.

South of Akureyri in Eyjafjarðarsveit is the raw-food and vegetarian restaurant Silva, open in the summer time. Run by Kristín Kolbeinsdóttir, the restaurant’s most popular dishes are its pizzas, roasts and wraps.
