Around Iceland 2015: Blönduós

Iceland’s national newspaper Morgunblaðið is on a six-week 2015 tour of Iceland!

The paper’s journalists and photographers will be bringing us news and images of everyday life, culture, business, nature, education, services and more from the four corners of the land. Today’s destination: Blönduós.

Blönduós

Blönduós is a town and municipality in North Iceland with a population of just under 900. It is situated at the mouth of the Blanda glacial river, after which it is named. This whole area of North Iceland engages in activities such as agriculture and fisheries.

To the south-west of Blönduós in the district of Húnavatn is Hólabak, the location of cushion company Lagður, which began sales in 2011. The company is run by married couple Ingvar Björnsson and Elín Aradóttir and their Icelandic prints have proven very popular.

Amateur photographer Róbert Daníel Jónsson moved to Blönduós from the West Fjords ten years ago. A keen fisherman, he reveals his favourite spot as Grundartjörn in Svínadalur valley to the south of Blönduós. The Blönduós area is apparently a paradise for hiking and fishing.

Some 20 km to the north of Blönduós is the town of Skagaströnd, with a population of almost 500. In many ways a typical Icelandic rural town, it is special inasmuch as it is home to the interesting and intriguing Skagaströnd Museum of Prophecies.
