Warning: Don't collect mussels on Icelandic shores during summer
Icelandic mussels are absolutely delicious but you should only purchase them at a fishmonger or at a restaurant this summer. mbl.is/Sverrir Vilhelmsson
The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST) warns against collecting blue mussels on Icelandic shores this summer. "The rule of thumb is don't collect mussels for eating purposes in any month of the year that doesn't have an R in it." (Month names in Iceland share their R's with month names in English).
MAST has found Alexandrium and Dinophysis toxic algae in ocean samples from Hvalfjörður Breiðafjörður, Mjóifjörður and Steingrímsfjörður.
They do however stress that blue mussels sold on the Icelandic market have been thoroughly inspected and are perfectly safe.
