A faceful of whipped cream and chocolate

Bolludagur, or bun day was enjoyed by all ages in Iceland yesterday. Cream buns were made at home, sold in bakeries and served up at work and school. We visited the Rauðhóll playschool in Reykjavik where children enjoyed the special treat.

Today, celebrated as Shrove Tuesday or Pancake day in Anglo-Saxon countries is called Sprengidagur in Iceland, a day where you "explode" because of eating too much food in preparation for the lent which begins tomorrow, Ash Wednesday(Öskudagur).

On Sprengidagur, Icelanders traditionally feast on salted lamb served with a slit pea soup (saltkjöt og baunir).
