The Mayor of Reykjavik unveiled a piece of the Berlin Wall in the Icelandic capital on Saturday to mark the 25th anniversary of German reunification.

The new monument, acquired from the Neu West Berlin art gallery, is located near Höfði in Reykjavik, a building made famous in 1986 when US President Ronald Reagan and the USSR’s Mikhail Gorbachev met there at the ‘Reykjavik Summit’.

It was considered appropriate to locate the new monument – a piece of the Berlin Wall, a symbol of Cold War division – next to Höfði, which is seen to mark a step towards the end of the Cold War.

October 3 is celebrated in Germany as the Day of German Unity (‘Tag der Deutschen Einheit’) and 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of German reunification.
