Reykjavik Pride under way!
Today marks the start of Reykjavik Pride 2015, a six-day event showcasing “pride, activism, entertainment, performance, education, glitter and joy” in support and celebration of LGBTIQ individuals.
Reykjavik Pride officially got under way today when Director of Reykjavik Pride Eva María Þórarinsdóttir Lange and Mayor of Reykjavik Dagur B. Eggertsson opened a photo exhibition on Reykjavik’s Skólavörðustígur.
The street, which leads up to Reykjavik’s iconic Hallgrímskirkja church, will then be painted in rainbow colours to mark the event.
The theme of Reykjavik Pride 2015 is health – physical, emotional and mental – and health issues among the LGBTIQ community.
Diversity is the order of the day and guests have some thirty events to choose from, including the traditional Opening Ceremony, Pride Parade and Pride Ball. Tens of thousands are expected at the Pride Parade and Concert on Saturday 8 August.
