Protestors gathered on Reykjavik’s Parliament Square (‘Austurvöllur’) yesterday to demand the return to Iceland of two young children deported to their native Albania last week.

The boys’ families were denied asylum in Iceland and deported, in a case which has attracted national attention. One of the boys, Kevi, suffering from life-threatening cystic fibrosis, while the other, Arjan just one year old, has a heart defect.

The demonstration began at 5 pm yesterday afternoon and attracted some 400 participants.

“We must continue to talk about this and put pressure on the government to push this through,” says organiser Una María Óðinsdóttir. “We want those boys back in Iceland right away.”

Both families have applied for Icelandic citizenship and their case is being considered by the relevant parliamentary committee. Icelandic doctors have gone on record as saying that the young boys will not get the medical attention they need back in Albania.
