Anonymous pursue Iceland cyber attacks
The campaign led by internet activist group Anonymous to attack Icelandic government websites continues in earnest, but new internet defence systems have prevented any attacks getting through.
Late last month, Anonymous ‘hacktivists’ brought down several ministry websites in an organised cyber-attack in protest at Iceland’s commercial whaling operations.
Another wave of attacks hit last weekend, but were repelled by newly installed defence devices, says Ragnheiður H. Magnúsdóttir, CEO of Hugsmiðjan, the internet solutions company hosting the Icelandic government’s websites.
Magnúsdóttir rejects the claims made by the leader of Iceland’s Pirate Party Birgitta Jónsdóttir that the lack of any further attacks on government websites had something to do with her personal intervention.
“It’s a nice story, but false,” says Magnúsdóttir. “Anonymous have not stopped attacking – it is our web defences that have stopped them.”
