Icelandic low-cost airline WOW air receives the first of its new A330 jets early next month – and has decided to register the aircraft TF-GAY.

As reported by Gay Iceland, the decision is a declaration of support by the airline for queer rights, which has a tradition of naming its planes with three-letter references to the modern family.

The airline already has Airbus aircraft names TF-MOM, TF-DAD, TF-SIS, TF-BRO, TF-SON and TF-KID, and now – upon the suggestion of one of the airline’s pilots – TF-GAY, writes Gay Iceland’s Ingibjörg Rósa.

“We wholeheartedly support queer people’s fight for rights. Just as we support equal rights for everybody, no matter their gender, religion, ethnicity or culture,” says WOW air CEO Skúli Mogensen.

“I was fortunate enough to be brought up in different places of the world and have lived here and there, still going all around the globe,” he continues. “The more you get to know people in different corners of the world the more you realise that of course we should all respect and learn from each other, no matter what our religion, skin colour or sexual orientation is.”

Two more 350-seat A330 aircraft are due to be delivered in June and will bear the names TF-LUV and TF-WOW.

“Prejudice and narrow-mindedness are usually the result of ignorance and an inferiority complex,” concludes Mogensen. “Since day one, we’ve emphasised joy and friendliness in our services because we want everybody to feel welcome in the WOW family.”
