Temperatures across Iceland are set to take a nosedive over the next few days with the capital Reykjavik seeing a minimum of -21°C (-6°F) on Christmas Day.

A deep area of low pressure to the east of Iceland has caused a build-up of freezing Arctic air to the north – which will be making its way over Iceland as the big day approaches.

Maximum temperatures will gradually fall below freezing from place to place over the next few days, with the height of the cold snap being felt on Christmas Day.

According to forecasters, the next few days are set to see one of the coldest periods of the winter so far.

Snowfall is also forecast with a white Christmas described as “certain” in North and East Iceland and “likely” in southern parts.
