One dead in South Iceland car crash

One person has died and three are injured following a serious car crash near Vík in South Iceland.

The accident occurred just after 3pm yesterday. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle to the east of Pétursey mountain and plunged into the Klifandi river. Four foreign tourists were on board.

Police and ambulance teams attended the scene and the main road was closed in both directions.

One of the passengers was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver suffered serious injuries and was helicoptered by the Icelandic Coast Guard to hospital. The two other passengers suffered less serious injuries.

The cause of the accident is still unclear and South Iceland Police are investigating the scene.
